Through consistent, compassionate interaction with horses, clients can work on building trust in themselves and others. The horse’s non-judgemental nature helps clients feel accepted, which can contribute to an increase in self-esteem. Successfully working with a horse helps individuals experience a sense of accomplishment and self-efficacy, which boosts confidence. Building emotional awareness is one of the ways equine-assisted psychotherapy supports healing. Horses are highly sensitive to human emotions, and they mirror the emotional states of those around them. This can help clients develop better emotional awareness and regulation, as they learn to recognize and manage their feelings in response to the horse’s reactions. The calming presence of horses and the nature of the therapy provide a peaceful environment that reduces stress and anxiety. This is a shout out to @harmonyinhorses based in S

This is a shout out to @harmonyinhorses based in Sheridan, Indiana (USA). This non-profit offers healing through horses and mentors for youth with complex trauma. Founder Lisa Condes reached out to me to advise that their organization will be launching Building Internal Resilience through Horses in 2025 thanks to funding from their local Women of Impact Boone County and the Community Foundation of Boone County. The program will be offered to women aged 13-22 years living with interpersonal trauma and plans include supporting a group of young Hispanic women. Building Internal Resilience through Horses is the product of a Peterborough, Ontario-based research initiative between The Mane Intent, Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre and Trent University funded by The Public Health Agency of Canada. This project was a game-changer for me and the reason I pursued more education to become a registered therapist. While no longer offered in the Peterborough area, it makes my heart sing to see other communities acknowledging the value of this evidence-based program. Ironically, I first met Sonya Vellenga, then Executive Director at KSAC at a Community Foundation of Peterborough partnership event where the seed of possibility was planted.
