Fund for Gender Equality Supports Resilience-Building Wellness Days

We’re pleased to share that The Mane Intent and Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre will host Building Resilience Through Equine Connection this summer thanks to a $14,000 grant from the Fund for Gender Equality. Administered locally by the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, the Fund for Gender Equality reflects a collaboration between Community Foundations of Canada and the Equality Fund, with support from the Government of Canada. The Fund supports ambitious, local projects that advance gender equality. It builds on efforts to shift power to women, girls, Two-Spirit and gender-diverse people, and will work towards a future grounded in justice and gender equality.

One day experiences of trauma- and violence-informed equine-assisted learning will provide socially distant, and promising practice, trauma- and violence-informed programming. Our intent is to provide skill building for resilience, mental well-being and social connection for women and youth affected by intersectional and gender-based violence.

The following organizations and their clients will be welcomed to connect with our herd as part of this funded programming:

  • New Canadian Centre is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to supporting immigrants, refugees and other newcomers in the Peterborough and Northumberland regions.
  • Niijkwendidaa Anishnaabekwegwag Services Circle is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the development and delivery of healing services for Anishnaabekwewag and their families who have been abused, are being abused, or are at risk of being abused. Healing work is conducted through the use of traditional Anishnaabe spirituality, blended with other appropriate methods of healing.
  • Elizabeth Fry Society of Peterborough provides gender responsive services and programs which focus on community interventions for individuals who have been or are at risk of being criminalized.
  • PARN Rainbow Youth strives to enrich the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, 2-spirit, intersex, queer and questioning youth.

We are grateful for our on-going partnership with Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre. The Centre is a feminist, not-for-profit, charitable organization dedicated to supporting those affected by sexual and gender-based violence and harm. At our Centre in Peterborough, we offer individual counselling, psychoeducational and therapeutic groups and workshops, advocacy and accompaniment services, crisis support, peer supports, prevention education and professional training. In our three surrounding communities of City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton and Northumberland, we work with local centres to provide responsive healing supports and prevention education events. KSAC offers at 24-hour crisis support line: 1-705-741-0260.
